Tags like ‘retro’, ‘old school’ and ‘nostalgia’ are common ways of evoking a love of musical styles from previous decades. But no one does old school like Sha Na Na.
The group have been a stalwart in US music for decades, their star beginning to rise after performing at Woodstock, just before Jimi Hendrix. They would later be the centrepiece of a hugely popular variety show (also named Sha Na Na) that ran from 1977 to 1981. Their 1950s style is credited as sparking a trend that led to movies like Grease (in which members both featured and helped co-write some of its original songs) and classic sitcoms like Happy Days.
Sha Na Na Niagara Falls Concert
The group has had a lot of members over the years, but they’re still touring strong. In January 2017 they’ll be performing at the Fallsview Casino Resort, with five performances across January 17–20. It’s the show to see for anyone who’s ever taken interest in ‘retro’ styles, as rock nostalgia began with Sha Na Na and they’re still among the best at it.
