The Fiddle and Steel Guitar Bar in Nashville, Tennessee was the location where Rascal Flatts first formed in 1999. Jay DeMarcus and Gary LeVox had worked together on Michael English’s album Gospel which resulted in them becoming closer in terms of their musical interests. During this time, Joe Don Rooney came to the bar where the band DeMarcus was playing in were without their lead guitarist for the night. They covered the single The Church on Cumberland Road by Shenandoah and a bond was instantly formed.
They were introduced to Lyric Street Records shortly afterwards thanks to a three-song demo that stunned the Doug Howard, the A&R representative. The following day, the band arrived at the office of Lyric Street Records and played acoustic guitars while covering a couple of songs. Thanks to the stunning lead vocals of Gary LeVox and the incredible harmonies that were created by DeMarcus and Rooney, the band was quickly signed in in 1999.
