Gavin DeGraw is a pop rock musician and song writer who has been honing his craft since the age of eight, when he began playing the piano. He grew up in a musical family and has been surrounded by music his whole life. His older brother is a professional musician as well, and Gavin started his professional career playing in cover bands with him. DeGraw is primarily a singer but plays guitar and piano also.
Gavin DeGraw's Musical Education
After graduating high school, DeGraw started taking classes at a four-year college but ended up dropping out because he was spending more time writing songs and playing music than he spent focusing on his studies. He later spent time at Berklee College of music, where his contemporary Jon Mayer was also studying at the time. After choosing to play professionally rather than continue his musical education at Berklee, Degraw relocated to New York City and began playing shows there. He steadily began gaining notoriety within the music community and built a fan base. He began to get several offers for record deal contracts. It didn’t take long for DeGraw to reach the worldwide stage with his top ten hit “I Don’t Want to Be”.
Gavin DeGraw Hits
“I Don’t Want to Be” was released under the album “Chariot” and had a follow up single track by the same name. It was not as successful as his first hit, but it did continue DeGraw to build on the success of “I Don’t Want to Be”. DeGraw curiously waited longer than most pop artists do to release his self-titled second album, five years after the . It originally charted higher than his first album but response was lukewarm and he did not have a large hit as he had with “I Don’t Want to Be”.
DeGraw released his third album only a few short months later. He followed that up with his fourth album Sweeter two years later. He took a different approach to this album, co-writing his songs with various other artists and musicians in an effort to write a more collaborative album than past efforts. The album contained “Not Over You”, his first hit that really brought him back to the charts since “I Don’t Want to Be”.
