For 17 years now the annual craft show as hosted by the Rotary Club of Niagara Falls Sunrise has grown and developed from a small communal event into a larger festival with a variety of activities on offer. Bigger than ever, the 17th annual Christmas by the Falls will for the third year running see the vendors set up in the local Scotiabank Convention Centre. That’s 16,000 square feet of demonstrations, shows and activities – twice the size as in previous years. A hundred vendors will occupy the space over one weekend in December to service a crowd expected to top 3000 over the two-day event.
Christmas Shopping Experience
Characterised as a ‘holiday shopping experience’, Christmas by the Falls is a community staple and a chance for local businesses and groups to exhibit themselves in an open and fun-loving environment. With an advertising budget of $50 000 for an active campaign through local TV, newspapers and radio, it’s a signature event for both consumers and businesses.
16th Annual Christmas by the Falls Event
One of the most appealing features of any craft show and open market is the local goods, and there is always plenty of offer. Produce is one of the biggest crowd-drawers as small businesses spruik honey, sauces, handmade cookies, teas and sweets. All food-based vendors are approved for business by the Public Health Department Inspection Division of the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The vendors also include local crafts and services – beadwork, spa accessories and candles for sale as well as henna artists, party hosting services and massage therapy. Hair styling is available on site and holiday photographers are set up for family photos.
Demonstrations and open performances liven up the atmosphere with rooms used to host a variety of musicians, speakers and dancers to entertain shoppers and promote local talent – including a performance from a local school choir. The festival is built around a holiday aesthetic as per its namesake, so the centre is draped in Christmas cheer and Santa is likely to provide a helping hand in the cooking demonstrations. Underneath it all is the Rotary Club itself, running raffles and donating the proceeds of the weekend to local charities, all as part of its commitment to community enrichment and support.
