The Barenaked Ladies are coming to the Fallsview Casino this March. Learn more about the history of this iconic alt-rock group:

BNL was formed in 1988 as a duo with Ed Robertson and Steven Page. A year later, brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan joined up with Tyler Stewart following a year later. By 1995, Andy had left the band and Page left in 2009. Their first release was a self-title cassette in 1990 that managed to become the first ever to be certified gold in Canada that was independent. Reprise Records managed to sign BNL and in 1992 the album “Gordon” was released.

Over the next four years, BNL began to change their style from the acoustic-heavy songs that dominated their early years to more rock-oriented material that incorporated rap, hip hop, and pop. This eclectic approach labeled the band as “alt-rock”, but their unique style and inclusion of comedy material in concerts only endeared them to their fans.

While “Gordon” was a substantial success, it was the 1996 live album “Rock Spectacle” that included the singles “Brian Wilson” and “The Old Apartment” that really broke them out. That success was followed by their fourth album, “Stunt” in 1998 that included the single “One Week” that became a huge smash in Canada and the US.

The group followed up “One Week” with other hit singles, “It’s All Been Done” and from their fifth album, “Maroon” came the hit, “Pinch Me”.

Still popular, BNL, the album “Everything to Everyone”, which did modestly well when released in 2003. The group ended its relationship with Reprise Records and they started to release material independently again. By 2009, Steven Page had left BNL and the group pressed on as a quartet. Ed Robertson took over the duties of lead singer.

BNL in Niagara Falls

One of music’s most prominent songs over the past few is the theme to “The Big Bang Theory” which has helped keep BNL in the spotlight. In June, 2015, BNL released “Silverball” and supported it with the Last Summer on Earth 2015 tour which enjoyed considerable success.

BNL followed up their 2015 tour with the Last Summer on Earth 2016 tour that has also enjoyed considerable success. BNL’s tendencies to change up their sound, add new technology, and inject humor into their music keeps them a favorite on the tour scene.
