It took a long time for Laura Secord to be celebrated, but these days she’s lauded as a national heroine. A Queenston local, she trekked through hostile territory after the American invasion of the Niagara Peninsula, determined to deliver enemy intelligence that she had overheard, to the British forces located at DeCew House, 32 km away. Her fateful warning ensured the British victory at the Battle of Beaver Dams.
Laura Secord is celebrated every year on the third Saturday in June.
Laura Secord Canada and Niagara’s Hero
The Laura Secord Homestead is located along the Niagara Parkway in the Village of Queenston. It has been redeveloped and refurnished into an historical site and family-friendly activity centre.
Open from May throughout September, the homestead provides entertaining tours by costumed professionals daily – but on the third Saturday every June, the activity roster is expanded and entry is by donation between 10am and 2pm. Weaving, woodworking, spinning, music, and other kid-friendly activities abound.
Laura Secord Walk
Every year, the Friends of Laura Secord (a local historical group formed to perpetuate Laura’s legacy and that of her contemporaries) organize the annual Laura Secord Walk. This year the walk is on Saturday June 18th.
The Laura Secord Legacy Trail was established as a legacy initiative in 2013 to honour the 200th anniversary of Laura Secord’s epic journey and is a modern day approximation of the 32 km route she took in the defence of her country. Beginning at the Laura Secord Homestead, the trail meanders through portions of Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, and finishes at the historic remains of DeCew House in Thorold.
The trek is a fascinating and varied route encompassing everything from ancient forested aboriginal pathways to modern city sidewalks. Registration is required for the annual walk, and while most people want to walk all of Laura’s footsteps, for those that just want a bit of walking mixed with some fun along the way – no problem, they can hop on the Secord Shuttle bus when they get tired that day.
For a family looking for a day of fun and informative activities, or a history buff looking to learn about an iconic figure in Canada’s history and mythos, Laura Second Day provides a grand opportunity.
