There are a lot of ways to get around the Niagara area – the public and private buses have well-developed networks and driving around the countryside is hassle-free. But the best way to get around both the town itself and around the picturesque landscape is cycling.
One of Canada’s Top Biking Systems
With a huge variety of routes in both road courses and scenic trails, the network of bike trails in Niagara Falls and Southern Ontario caters for both amateurs and experienced riders. It’s become a highly-regarded pastime in the region and with both a wide variety of routes and many different venues of choice for bike hire, cycling as a transport option has never been easier in Niagara.
Best Niagara Cycling Locations to Visit
Many restaurants, wineries and public facilities on or near the main bike routes have bike racks and relaxed dress codes to better cater for riders. Niagara Falls is incredible friendly and accessible for visiting cyclists.
There are hundreds of routes to check out across Niagara, and the online resource of the Library of Scenic Routes can help in determining which of these tracks suits your personal preference and fitness level. So whether you’re simply interested in a leisurely ride around the town, or want to tackle the larger trails, there are plenty of options to hit the road on two wheels and see the sights. Here are some of our favourites:
Niagara Wine Route
Famous for its wine country, the Niagara wine route is a delight for bikers as it is mostly flat land. It’s not only picturesque but also has several lovely wineries along the way.
Niagara-on-the-Lake situated at a short distance from Niagara Falls is one such place. Some of the wineries offer a bike lock-up area during the daytime, access to washrooms, route information and of course fantastic red wines, white wines, icewines and much more. Along the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine route, you can stop at:
and several other wineries.
The wine route also takes you through cities, towns and communities such as St Catharines, Jordan, Vineland, Beamsville and Grimsby. Each of these locations is biker-friendly and has some wonderful wineries.
The Parkway itself runs along one of the major trails in the Niagara region: the Niagara River Recreation Trail, which snakes along the river from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie It’s further divided into four smaller stretches, all with its own history and scenic pleasures, as well as numerous stop-offs for refreshment and relaxation. The whole trail forms part of the massive network of trails that encircles the whole region: the Greater Niagara Circle Route.
There are smaller trails around the town of Niagara Falls, including the 2 km Millennium Trail, or fitter cyclists might head west from town to check out the regional trails. Also be sure to head on up to Niagara-on-the-Lake and tackle at least part of the 49 km Waterfront Trail, or the shorter 14 km Upper Canada Heritage Trail. Below are some of the highlights:
Niagara Falls and Table Rock Welcome Centre
You can see one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world on this route along the Niagara River. And at the Table Rock Welcome Centre, you can also enjoy a close view of the powerful and stunning Horseshoe Falls.
