Sustainable energy is at the forefront of modern Niagara Falls. The Energy Concierge Program, an initiative by the Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. (NPE) and Enbridge Gas Distribution is a new endeavour to bring down energy usage in the hospitality industry in the Niagara region.
It is the first time that a local electric utility company has joined hands with a gas company to provide solutions for sustainable energy in the hotel sector not just in the Niagara region but Ontario as well.
An 18 month pilot program is set to roll out in five Niagara hotels & tourist destinations– including the Marriott on the Falls & Fallsview Casino. Saving electricity and natural gas will be the focus of the program. Administrative and technical assistance will be extended to these hotels by Enbridge and NPE. One of the steps will be the creation of a three year energy management plan for the hotels with support from technical advisors. Understanding, prioritizing and implementing energy saving opportunities will also be an important part of the program in addition to creating applications for incentives and sending them.
The funds for this program are being supplied by the Independent Electricity System Operator and it is being run in association with the Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association. A few of the existing participants in this program, namely the Green Key Award Winning Marriott on the Falls have systems in place to promote sustainability practices.
While the initial phase of the program has selected only five destinations, future plans by NPE will hope to take lessons learned and implement them to all the 131 hotels and motels in their area of service. Energy efficiency will eventually lead to a reduced ecological footprint and the Energy Concierge Program is a positive step towards a better future for the world.
