A delightful attraction near Niagara Falls, Ontario is the Whirlpool Aero Car, a cable car that enables visitors to see the famed Niagara Whirlpool in the river below. Thousands of years ago, a sharp turn in the direction of the flowing water near this part of the Niagara Gorge resulted in the creation of an interesting formation known as the Niagara Whirlpool. It is amazing to see the swirling waters of the whirlpool spin in a counter-clockwise motion in the Niagara River. At its deepest, the whirlpool has a depth of 125 feet.
The Whirlpool Aero Car takes visitors right over this spinning pool of water for a closer view. This cable car has been in operation for a long time–it will soon complete 100 years of existence as the first trip took place in 1916. Suspended from six strong steel cables, the Whirlpool Aero Car was designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and travels between two points on the Canadian shore of the Niagara River. Initially, the cable car was built without a roof and subsequent modifications included a roof. It ferries passengers for a distance of around one kilometre and also traverses American territory during the round trip. The cable car can accommodate 35 standing passengers and uses a 50 horsepower electric motor while travelling at a speed of 7 km/h.
Hang over the Falls
At the end of both terminals, the cable car is suspended at a height of 240 feet and as it approaches the whirlpool at the centre, it goes slightly lower to 200 feet. The entire landscape around this area is mesmerising with the Niagara Gorge, the river rapids, the flora that takes on different colours during different seasons and of course, the whirlpool. Visitors can see the swirling whirlpool below by standing on the sides of the Whirlpool Aero Car.
All necessary precautions and safety measures are in place for the cable car trip enabling visitors to have a safe, exciting ride over the whirlpool. In case of a power failure, a diesel engine powered hydraulic pump brings the cable car back to the terminal. Other than this, a five-seater car is available for rescue operations in case of emergency, however there has never been a need to use it so far. The cable car is operational around the year barring winter when it is usually closed on account of snow and ice.
The Niagara Whirlpool is an incredible natural phenomenon that deserves to be seen–go for a ride on the Whirlpool Aero Car and enjoy the moment!
The Whirlpool Aero Car opens on mid-April for the season.
