Prospect Point at the Niagara Falls State Park is one of the best viewing areas for a panoramic and aerial view of the Niagara Falls on the US side. The highlight is the 230 metre high observation tower that is the only place on the US side to view the American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe Falls together.
The observation tower opened in the year 1961 and subsequent renovations have made it a great spot to check out the view. The tower made of aluminium, steel and glass has a viewing deck that extends breathtakingly out over the Niagara Gorge.
Visitors can get an unobstructed view of the surroundings due to the height of the tower. The American Falls can be seen cascading down from very close quarters with the Bridal Veil Falls next to it. The experience is heightened by the roaring sound of the falls and the sight of the gushing water crashing into the river. At a distance, the Horseshoe Falls can be seen tumbling down, spraying mist into the air. You can also see the raging rapids in the Niagara River below and view the boats making their way to the falls. The observation deck also has high-power lenses installed for a close-up view of the landscape and the falls.
Nature from a Unique Perspective
If you are interested in bird watching, the observation tower is a great place to see these feathered creatures. Bald eagles, peregrine falcons and gulls are some of the birds that can be spotted in the area surrounding the Niagara Gorge.
The base of the observation tower is the starting point for the Maid of the Mist boat tours. Elevators at the observation tower take visitors to the foot of the gorge. From here, boats take them down the Niagara River for a view of the falls. The base of the gorge also provides access to a better view of the American Falls. There is a series of stairs that takes visitors to the Crow’s Nest, a great place to actually experience the spray of the American Falls.
The observation tower is open around the year, weather permitting. The indoor deck also has a snack bar, rest rooms and a gift shop. More than eight million people visit this place annually. A visit to the Niagara Falls on the US side is incomplete without a visit to Prospect Point.
