Compared to wineries and winemaking estates across the region, breweries come across as being in short supply – but especially as of late, Niagara has not been scarce of quality craft beer and cider.
Oast House Brewers have been around a few years, but the same could be said for most of the fresh-faced breweries that have bolstered the Niagara Region’s recent craft beer boom. So what makes Oast House difference? For starters, the aesthetic is very different. While most breweries are pushing for sleek ultra-modernism or European heritage appeal, Oast House is proudly rustic. Situated along Niagara Stone Road not far from Niagara-on-the-Lake, the brewery runs out of ‘the Big Red Barn’, and all bottles are stamped as ‘Farmhouse Ales’.
The estate’s agricultural focus means variety, and using produce from both their estate and the region in general the brewery has dabbled in peach ales, wheat beers, saisons, dubbels, ciders and much more. In between the Japanese-inspired fruit beers and the German-style Hefeweizen, the pale ales and stouts don’t disappoint.
Oast House is also in partnership with Toronto-based gourmet food chain El Gastronomo Vagabundo, a food truck based business that has won awards for its menu and business model. The EL Gastronomo truck sets up at the brewery every Friday night from 5pm until 11pm, and live music from local acts play every Friday as well. Occasionally there are special weekend events as well, especially around public holidays, so keep checking ahead and there might be a one-night experience worth making time for.
Oast House is a down-to-earth estate proud of grass-roots culture and unafraid to experiment with its range, meaning that there’s something on tap for just about every taste in beer. Friday nights are the best time to visit but the Beer Shed, where the bar is set up and regular tastings are conducted, is open every day.
Oast House Brewers is a great location to visit when taking in the Niagara-on-the-Lake Craft Beer scene. If you’re staying or visiting near Niagara Falls itself, visit Niagara’s #1 rated craft brewery– The Niagara Brewing Company. The Niagara Brewing Company also produces a number of craft beer varities, including lager, IPA, brown ale and more. Located in the heart of Clifton Hill, Niagara Brewing Company is a can’t miss brewery when visiting the Niagara Region.
