The Niagara region takes a lot of pride in its local agriculture. From the vast array of winemaking estates to the variety of local growers and producers, the Niagara Region is full of culinary delights. And Kurtz Orchards is part of this.
Kurtz Orchards farm and marketplace is an iconic example of this grass-roots approach to developing great local food and produce. The Kurtz family migrated from Europe in the mid-20th century, and quickly rallied a local workforce to take advantage of the agricultural possibilities in the relatively untouched land. The estate is still family-owned, covering 50 acres of orchard and vineyard along the Niagara River, just near the Parkway.
Originally the enterprise focused on jams and jellies, as well as selling the spare fruit from wooden wagons out front, and those jams are still the Kurtz staple – although advanced agriculture means more flavours are on offer. The repertoire has been expanded with modern methods, now including wine jelly, syrups and baked goods.
The best quality of Kurtz Orchards is its determination to spread their passion for locally-grown gourmet food. The estate regularly promotes other suppliers and foster an interest in good local food, keeping rigorous in sharing new recipes and ideas. They run a country market with seasonal fruits and local goods, open every day for walk-in customers. Recently the family has also opened a culinary shop on Niagara-on-the-Lake’s main street, selling local produce and cookbooks.
The estate itself is also picturesque. The family always welcomes new visitors, keeping that market stocked and offering a menu of freshly cooked foods and treats like homemade ice cream. It’s a historic but cultivated setting.
Kurtz Orchards locals favourite, serving as a prominent champion of good NOTL food, both from its own production and from other grass-roots producers.
